Drawing roads is different from drawing point-of-interests (POIs) as it consists of a sequence of coordinates we call nodes. While POIs is usually our point of destination, the roads are important to take us there. How you draw your roads will influence how autorouting will calculate a route to that destination.
Drawing roads on the map
Once you have your map tile open, zoom in to your area of interest and then hit 0 (zero) on your numeric keypad. This ensures you are mapping on Level 0, the most detailed map level.
To draw a road, also known as a polyline, use the Create Polyline Object tool by clicking on Tools > Create Object > Polyline or simply hit
B on your keyboard. There is also a toolbar icon for Create Object in the shape of a wand: Click and choose
Polyline from the drop-down menu. Make sure your zoom level is between 20m to 30m to get the right granularity for road curvatures.
With the Create Polyline Object tool now selected, point to the location of the beginning of your road and left-click. Continue clicking on the next curvature of the road if the road bends, or click the end node if the road is a staright one. You can also use the
Insert button on the keyboard for faster drawing using both hands: one hand on the mouse to point where the next node should be, and the other hand is on the
Insert button to insert nodes (usually designated to the middle finger) and the arrow buttons to navigate the window (usually designated to the thumb). Once you reach the end of the road, hit Enter on your keyboard. Alternatively you may use the right mouse button to select End in the context menu.
Once you end your polyline draw, you need to designate a polyline type. After you have chosen the polyline type, a text box will appear on the map for you to type in the roadname. If you do not know the roadname, leave it empty by hitting Enter on your keyboard again.
Source of Road Data
There are many source of road data but the best source is yourself as no one knows your town more than you. If you have purchased a
GPSmapedit license you can easily turn on the Google Earth underlay to trace the roads.
Other sources of Road Data are tracklogs submitted by users and trackers:
1. Community contributions:
2.
Google Maps
3.
Openstreetmap.org
Make sure you cite your source in the SVN Log on commit.
