Point of interests (POIs) are map objects which consists of a single coordinate (longitude, latitude) with certain attributes like city, address and phone number. It marks the point location of your favourite restaurant,
petrol stations, supermarkets and banks. There are over 200 POIs in GPSmapedit but you will use less than half of them.
Drawing the POI on the map
Once you have your map tile open, zoom in to your area of interest and then hit 0 (zero) on your numeric keypad. This ensures you are mapping on Level 0, the most detailed map level.
To draw a POI, use the Create POI Object tool by clicking on
Tools > Create Object > Point or simply hit
A on your keyboard. There is also a toolbar icon for Create Object in the shape of a wand: Click and choose Point from the drop-down menu.
Create POI Object Tool
With the Create POI Object tool now selected, point to the location of the POI and click. A POI Type window will popup for you to choose from and then label your POI accordingly.
To add attributes to your POI, use the Select tool or hit
S on your keyboard then right click on your POI to select Properties. You may want to add the Address attributes which includes City, Address and Postcode and the phone number if you have it.
All POIs should not be extended to a higher level -
Object Properties > Elements > All elements are extended to levels up to should always be 0 (zero) - except City POIs. City POIs are usually extended to Level 1 or 2 depending on the city population.

Source of POI coordinates
There are many source of POI coordinates but the best source is yourself as no one knows your town more than you. If you have purchased a
GPSmapedit license you can easily turn on the Google Earth underlay to determine the exact location. You can also determine the POI coordinate by using
Google Earth which require a few extra steps to get into GPSmapedit.
Other sources of POIs are:
1. Community contributions:
2.
Google Maps
Make sure you cite your source in the SVN Log on commit.
Marking POI for a Large Area
School compounds, theme parks, supermarkets or government buildings usually cover a large area that marking a point can be daunting. Do you put the POI at the center of the structure? Do you put it at the parking area? The standard at Masmap is to put the POI at the gate entrance as it is closest to the road allowing routing to guide the user more accurately.
